What Is Data? Let’s Explore!

Lesson 5 of 8

🔔 Since we will learn the basics of data science in this course, let’s start by understanding what data means.

So, what is data?

Data is made up of small pieces of information—like numbers, words, symbols, observations, or measurements. These little pieces tell us something about the world. They can show what something is or how much of it there is.

When we collect lots of data, it can come together to form big and meaningful sets of information.

For example:
❓ Is it cloudy today?
❓ Will it rain?
❓ Do I need to take an umbrella when I go outside?
❓ How many classmates do I have?
❓ What was my score on the math test?

These questions—and their answers—are all data! Every answer we give shows how we use data to plan our daily lives.
That’s because data is everywhere in life.

The story of data is older than our own story. In other words, data existed even before us. But we, as humans, gave data meaning by learning from it and making conclusions. Thousands of years ago, people looked at the sky and watched the stars. They collected data by observing the stars. This data was recorded, and star maps were made. Thanks to those maps, people could travel, discover new places, and explore the world.

Throughout history, people collected more and more data. Having lots of data helped us make smarter choices. Because of this, we got better at farming, built cities, and created the modern world we live in today.
